Stephen Lang teases the return of his villainous character for Avatar 2

March 10, 2020 by Samuel Brace

Stephen Lang, who returns as Colonel Miles Quaritch for Avatar 2 and its sequels, has teased some of the details of the next chapter of James Cameron’s sci-fi epic.

The long-awaited sequel to box office juggernaut Avatar is still a long way away, not arriving in cinemas until December 2021. But with the promise of several more sequels to come afterward, fans of the James Cameron movie should be well rewarded.

Stephen Lang is one of numerous actors to return for the movie, reprising his role as Colonel Miles Quaritch. Speaking to The National, Lang describes what has changed for his character and what it was like to return:

“It’s very satisfying to know that the character was valued enough and made enough of an impression to [have Cameron] say ‘we’re not done with him yet’. That, initially, was kind of wonderful, to me. My job is really to advocate the role that I’m playing, and so it’s satisfying to have that much more time to discover Quaritch, find out what makes him tick, talk about him, and hopefully defy expectations that people have for the character, to create new expectations. I’m working now with a much broader canvas than I was with the first Avatar, and it keeps me in concert with James Cameron to really go to town and examine the character in detail. That, to me, is totally tremendously satisfying and challenging.

“He has evolved, definitely. We’re making four more films, so if he doesn’t evolve, we’re in some kind of trouble. And it’s not always a question of evolution, it’s about becoming more deeply entrenched. I’m still discovering it. That’s something I’ll be discovering as we continue to work because we’re by no means near finished with this process.”

With Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana among the other big names returning for the sequel, hopefully, Avatar 2 can capture some of the original’s magic while still bringing something fresh to the table.

Avatar 2 is expected to hit theatres on 17th December 2021. Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Matt Gerald, Dileep Rao, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi and Sigourney Weaver all reprise their roles from the first film, while new additions to the cast include Kate Winslet, Oona Chaplin, Cliff Curtis, Britain Dalton, Filip Geljo, Jamie Flatters, Bailey Bass, Trinity Bliss, Jack Champion, Duane Evans Jr., Edie Falco, Brandan Cowell, Michelle Yeoh, Jemaine Clement, Keston John and CJ Jones.
