Steven S. DeKnight has talked with Sony about an R-rated God of War movie

June 7, 2018 by Samuel Brace

Sony has apparently discussed with director Steven S. DeKnight about making an R-rated live-action adaptation of God of War.

There isn’t exactly a rich history of video game to movie adaptations to point to, but the recently resurgent God of War franchise might be looking to set things right by talking to Daredevil and Pacific Rim: Uprising alum Steven DeKnight about a live action film.

Speaking to ComicBook.com, DeKnight reveals that following a tweet where he praised PlayStation’s latest entry in the franchise, he spoke to Sony about a potential movie:

“I had some early conversations with the good people at Sony PlayStation about it and my biggest thing is, look, you gotta approach it like a book. Approach it like adapting Jaws. For people who’ve read Jaws, the movie is very different but they’re both fantastic. So you have to be able to take the source material and make it work as a movie. And I think that’s part of the reason oftentimes video game movies don’t work is because you can’t translate the video game experience into a movie. You gotta take the characters and the situations and the emotions and make it work for a movie. Which means a lot of times you’ve got to change things, which is very dicey obviously because you don’t want to alienate video game fans, but you have to make a film that works within the context of a movie by itself. Very difficult.”

While DeKnight admits that he isn’t in active talks to direct the movie, it certainly sounds like he might be the man for the job and understands the immense difficulty of pulling off a video game adaptation. We will have to wait and see.
