Stranger Things’ Charlie Heaton says The New Mutants “going full-fledged horror”

April 15, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Having originally been slated to open in theaters this weekend, we now still have some 16 months to wait before we get to see 20th Century Fox’s X-Men spinoff The New Mutants.

Having been delayed twice, Fox has now taken the decision to “overhaul” the movie with up to 50% reshoots, reportedly inserting new characters, as well as ramping up the horror elements. And, according to Stranger Things star Charlie Heaton – who plays the character of Cannonball – Fox and director Josh Boone are looking to take the movie into “full-fledged horror” territory.

“It’s basically about these mutants in a facility for damaged mutants,” Heaton told EW. “It’s a story about these characters coming to grips with who they are and it’s a horror X-Men movie, which we haven’t seen before. I feel like, for an X-Men movie, yeah, I think they’re going full-fledged horror. Without saying too much — I really don’t want to give away too much what it’s about, it’s very under wraps — but it is, in terms of anything we’ve seen in the X-Men world, it definitely is a horror film. It’s scarier than anything we’ve seen in that genre.”

Heaton also went on to briefly describe his character, stating that: “Sam comes from Kentucky, and he’s kind of a working-class boy, and he has the ability to project himself through the sky like a cannonball.”

X-Men: The New Mutants is directed by Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars), and features a cast includes Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) as Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane, Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) as Illyana Rasputin/Magik, Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things) as Sam Guthrie/Cannonball, Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why) as Roberto da Costa/Sunspot, Blu Hunt (The Originals) as Danielle Moonstar/Mirage and Alice Braga (Queen of the South) as Dr. Cecilia Reyes. It is set for release on August 2nd 2019.
