Suicide Squad director says ‘The Ayer Cut’ release would be “incredibly cathartic”

May 26, 2020 by EJ Moreno

It seems like Zack Snyder’s Justice League coming to HBO Max opened the flood gates for filmmakers wanting to see their original visions, and it seems that David Ayer, director of 2016’s Suicide Squad, is hoping to see his film get the same treatment as Snyder’s much-talked-about cut of Justice League.

Recently on Twitter, Ayer expressed his interest in seeing a cut of his polarizing film come to HBO Max and even called the potential release something “incredibly cathartic.” Check out the tweet here…

This is a good question. My cut would be easy to complete. It would be incredibly cathartic for me. It’s exhausting getting your ass kicked for a film that got the Edward Scissorhands treatment. The film I made has never been seen. https://t.co/FkeHAlNoV0

For anyone who doesn’t remember, reports came out that Warner Bros took over the final cut of Suicide Squad, just months before the release, and had the company who edited the trailer re-work the entire thing. Ayer has been very vocal about the version we saw in theatres not being his real vision for the film, going as far back as the same month of its release.

In recent months though, Ayer has seemingly lobbied for his version to receive a release. He’s detailed his plans for the particular characters and teased images of deleted scenes. However, with the three-year battle for the Snyder Cut barely over, it seems like fans may have to wait a bit longer for David Ayer’s Suicide Squad.
