It’s been over a year now since it was first revealed that rights holders Constantin Film is teaming with Netflix to bring the iconic survival horror franchise Resident Evil to the small screen, and while we’ve had no updates since the initial announcement, a short synopsis was reportedly uploaded to the Netflix Media Center in error recently which reveals that the show is set some 26 years after the events of the first game.
“The town of Clearfield, MD has long stood in the shadow of three seemingly unrelated behemoths—the Umbrella Corporation, the decommissioned Greenwood Asylum, and Washington, D.C. Today, twenty-six years after the discovery of the T-Virus, secrets held by the three will start to be revealed at the first signs of outbreak.”
It’s rumoured that filming on the Resident Evil TV series is scheduled to get underway later this year, so given reference the 26-year gap, could that mean that Netflix is looking at a 2022 premiere for the show – some 26 years after the launch of Resident Evil on the PlayStation back in 1996? Hopefully we’ll get more information soon.
In addition to the TV series, Constantin is also planning a reboot of the Resident Evil feature film franchise, with 47 Meters Down helmer Johannes Roberts attached to direct.
