TAITO classic The NewZealand Story launches on Steam for PC

March 4, 2026 by Andrew Newton

Italian developer Bitobit has announced the launch of The NewZealand Story: Untold Adventure on Steam for PC. This rebirth of TAITO’s classic 1988 title has plenty of new features for today’s computers, while maintaining the cute characters, colourful worlds and addictive platform gameplay. A new trailer can be seen below, showcasing the cuteness overload…

The NewZealand Story: Untold Adventure tells the tale of a small kiwi called Tiki as he faces numerous villainous, but cute, creatures to rescue his girlfriend Phee Phee and his other kiwi friends, who have been kidnapped by Wally the Walrus (although the arcade game called him a leopard seal). Players will guide Tiki through 5 stages filled with lush forests, rugged coastlines, mysterious caves, and strange labyrinths.

In this remake, players can work their way through the game’s original four stages, and a brand-new fifth stage inspired by the Kaikoura district in the south of New Zealand that honours the heritage of the arcade game. As with the other stages, this new fifth one consists of four levels and a whole new boss, WORMAGEDDON.

All the charm and challenge of the original have been included in this remake – there are the cute characters to defeat, flying vehicles to discover and ride around on, and different weapons to use. Players can encounter brand-new enemies that maintain the charm of the original game, discover secret levels and take on unique challenges.

The Newzealand Story: Untold Adventure features:

  • Classic 2D arcade platforming action with all the charm of the original.
  • Use bows, other projectiles and upgrades, and take control of flying vehicles to save the other kiwis.
  • Battle of classic stages and a brand-new stage designed to honour the development of the original.
  • A new map layout, new health system and many more new features.
  • Updated art and music, but still recognisable for those who loved TAITO’s arcade gem.
  • Ideal for veteran gamers to enjoy the nostalgia, and for newcomers who want to discover its timeless charm.

Players, both young and old, can purchase The NewZealand Story: Untold Adventure on Steam now.
