Tech Review – Venom Power Pack and Stand for Nintendo Switch

April 17, 2018 by Calum Petrie

Calum Petrie reviews the Venom Power Pack and Stand for Nintendo Switch…

So as a recent convert to the Nintendo Switch, I have found playing games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and the other more graphically intensive games on this console are a bigger drain on battery than the more indie focuses titles. You can play about with the flight mode or even turn the brightness down and squeeze more life out the battery. Your other option can be to buy an accessory to extend your on-the-go playtime. The Venom Power Pack and Stand for the Nintendo Switch is the 2 in one answer to your Switch questions.

Before we delve into a roundup of my time with this device let me just throw some facts and figures out there for those who like that sort of thing. The Venom Power Pack and Stand has the following –

  • 10,000 mAh Battery
  • Double footed stand
  • LED battery life indicator
  • USB and USB-C ports
  • Slim Design
  • Double lock to hold console in place
  • 310g Weight

The Power pack is a lovely design that has two separate locks on the back; these hold the console in place and encase the device which is also a layer of security beefing up the slim and delicate console. When docked into the pack, the device will automatically start to receive a charge from the Venom pack; now you can turn off your console and leave it to charge, or keep playing off the power pack.

When encased in the power pack the device has holes cut out allowing you access to all the buttons and ports on the Switch console. The battery pack does not cover the sides of the console, so this allows you to attach and remove the Joy-Con controllers at your convenience.

The power pack does weigh 310g, which is not a lot by any means, but it can leave you feeling like you are holding a heavy weight over a period of time. The Switch console weighs 315g without Joy-Con controllers and 420g with the controllers attached. This is essentially doubling the weight of the base console; I preferred to remove the Joy-Cons and play the Venom-encased Switch while it was stationary and held up with the two-footed stands.

When using the Venom pack to charge your device, some may prefer to turn their device off and leave to charge, while others may play off the battery pack. I will say the Switch will get roughly two full charges from 0% battery from the Venom Power Pack, allowing for roughly 10 hours play. These figure can change however depending on brightness setting, flight mode, and what game you’re playing.

Overall this device was joy and definitely filled a space missing from my on-the-go gaming that the Switch has provided for me. I would go as far to call this a Summer Essential for all Nintendo Switch owners who are heading out for any holidays.
