The 64 – all the info you need to know

April 20, 2016 by Andrew Newton

Those of you who read The 64 article published on Flickering Myth earlier this week may, like me, be looking forward to seeing it become a reality just for the sake of playing classic 8 bit games.  There are also probably many more of you who want all the details on the tech that is due to be used inside this lovely little gaming time capsule.  Thankfully Retro Games have provided more details.

The 64 will run on a high powered yet low cost ARM Cortex SoC which will allow the system to be both affordable and flexible and will enable it to expand with the user in the future. It will certainly aim to be more expandable than the previously released C64DTV.

As much as can be possible will be released as open source to allow the community to help steer the future of The 64, this will mean the possibility of more homegrown games circulating and thus expanding such an already huge games catalogue.

The 64 is going to be the ultimate retro experience, it won’t be just the Computer and handheld to be released but also peripherals like matching joysticks, cartridge converters which will allow old original cartridges to work in the cartridge slot and potentially even joystick converters so that people can use their original Commodore 64 joysticks.

There will also be a selection of the best C64 programming books ever created released in both paperback and ebook formats.

The 64 is certainly sounding an excellent machine and should appeal to old and new fans alike.  Head on over to The 64 Indiegogo page to contribute.
