The Amazing Spider-Man 2 screenwriters discuss the movie’s villains

May 7, 2013 by admin

If you thought Tobey Maguire’s Spidey had it tough in the third instalment of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy going up against the Sandman (Thomas Hayden Church) and Venom (Topher Grace), then Andrew Garfield’s wall-crawler looks set to face an even bigger challenge in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

We already know that Jamie Foxx (Django Unchained) and Paul Giamatti (Sideways) are set to tangle with the web-slinger as Electro and Rhino, while Chris Cooper (American Beauty) will portray Norman Osborn. Throw into that the possibility of an evil Harry Osborn (Dane DeHann) and rumours that Felicity Jones (Like Crazy) will portray Black Cat, and the Marc Webb-directed sequel appears to be setting itself up for a supervillain overload. Not so according to screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (Star Trek Into Darkness), who offered up a few words on the growing roster of villains in the second instalment of Sony’s rebooted series:

“I think you have to go into it and say ‘is this character essential to the story or are you just throwing him in for no reason whatsoever’ [and] we would never, ever, ever dare to do anything other than what felt like it was organic to the flow of the story,” said Kurtzman during an interview with MTV Splashpage, before promising that there will be a specific reason for each character’s involvement in the story: “[A] lot of consideration has been given to the structure of [The Amazing Spider-Man 2] so, hopefully, when you see it, you’ll get the big picture.”

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is set to swing into cinemas on April 18th 2014 in the UK and on May 2nd in North America. Also featuring in the cast are Emma Stone (Gangster Squad), Shailene Woodley (The Descendants), Sally Field (Lincoln) and Colm Feore (Thor).
