The Big Bang Theory spinoff casts young Sheldon Cooper

March 2, 2017 by Samuel Brace

The spinoff series to TV’s biggest sitcom has cast its lead character, a young Sheldon Cooper.

Spinoffs are of course all the rage these days and what popular sitcom hasn’t had a successor series at some point. From Cheers, M*A*S*H, Friends and more, The Big Bang Theory is moving into familiar sitcom territory.

The show is to revolve around Big Bang’s star Sheldon Cooper, featuring the character as a child growing up in Texas.

And now the younger version of this much beloved character has been cast, with actor Iain Armitage (Little Big Lies) taking up the role as Variety has learned.

The series is set to be named simply Sheldon with Armitage at its centre in the role currently inhabited by Jim Parsons.

Parsons will serve as Executive Producer on the series, and Zoe Perry is set to play Sheldon’s mother. Perry’s real life mother Laurie Metcalf actually played the same role in The Big Bang Theory in a strange and rather apt turn of events.

Negotiations for a two year renewal for the original Big Bang series are currently ongoing.
