The Big Video Games Releases of 2013 So Far

March 21, 2013 by admin

Andy Naylor looks at the big video game releases of 2013 so far…

As we are in the verge of the yearly gaming release slump, with no big arrivals scheduled until the end of April, I thought it best to give a quick summary and review of this year’s big releases so far…

Aliens: Colonial Marines

You can usually tell the quality and popularity of a game based upon how slowly or quickly its price falls. The fact that you can pick this up for £20 or less just a month after its release speaks volumes. What’s more disappointing is that the developer, Gearbox, is responsible for the quite brilliant Borderlands games, so they do have AAA quality in them. Aliens fans, don’t be curious, no matter how little you spend on this it’ll be too much, and only encourage them to make another.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

No Snake, no sneaking, no interest. Don’t buy this expecting more awesomeness from Snake, you’ll be sorely disappointed. Simply having ‘Metal Gear’ in the title will sucker a load of people into buying it, which just seems like a con. It is also criminally short and to charge in excess for £20 for it downright cheeky. Just wait until the price drops to a more reasonable level. If you like your hack and slash games then this is right up your street, but there are better quality titles for this out there…

Devil May Cry (DMC)

Speaking of which, the new and ‘reboot’ of the Devil May Cry franchise, hipply called DMC, is quite brilliant. Personally, I am not a hack and slash fan, but I do know many and all of them are in agreement, it’s a spectacular hit. Choose this over Metal Gear Rising.

Knytt Underground

“Mi Sprocket is a sprite who develops special powers as she embarks upon a quest to ring the six bells of fate; which if not rung every six hundred years will begin a chain reaction that will obliterate the world!” I’m guessing many of you haven’t heard of this little 2-D platformer, but don’t let that put you off. This is a beautifully crafted game of platforming puzzles that will leave you agonisingly frustrated in places, but once you conquer the deviousness of each conundrum you’ll feel relief and satisfaction. The first two levels are simply a warm up to the hellishly difficult third. It’s available as a digital download only, do not miss out.

Dead Space 3

Isaac is back in the third instalment of this hugely popular Sci-fi/horror/thriller third person action game. If you liked the first two games then this is more of the same. The main change is the scenery; a frozen wasteland is the location, as opposed to a derelict space craft, as Isaac attempts to find the source of the necromorph outbreak. A solid, but predictable, addition to the Dead Space universe. If you liked the previous games then you won’t be disappointed with this.

Tomb Raider

A superb addition to the franchise and a must buy. Check out the full review here.
