The Bronze becomes one of the biggest US box office flops of all time

March 21, 2016 by Scott J. Davis

After some positive word of mouth from last year’s Sundance Film Festival, new comedy film The Bronze has become one of the worst box-office flops in history this past weekend.

The film, which stars The Big Big Theory’s Melissa Rauch (who also co-wrote with her husband Winston) opened in 1.167 theaters over the weekend to an estimated $421,434. While that some may not look to unhealthy given its limited release, it actually only grossed a measly average of $361 per location.

With such disastrous numbers, The Bronze has now taken its place amongst the very worst openings of all time for a film debuting in more than 1,000 theatres. It hasn’t displaced vampire spoof film Transylmania, which grossed just $263,941 from 1,007 theaters back in 2009, but it has cracked the top five and joins such “distinctive” company Oogieloves In The BIG Balloon Adventure, Gold Diggers , Delgoand fellow 2015 Sundance entry The D Train, which starred Jack Black and James Marsden.

Released by Sony Classics, the film was actually snapped up for a cool $3 million by Relativity Media at Sundance 2015, and when the studio declared itself bankrupt last year, Sony stepped in.

In the film, Rauch stars as Hope Ann Greggory, “a foul-mouthed former Olympic medalist who reluctantly agrees to train another up-and-coming gymnast.” Gary Cole (Office Space), Sebastian Stan (Captain America: Civil War), and Thomas Middleditch (Sillicon Valley) co-star.
