The CW planning a gender-swapped The Picture of Dorian Gray series

October 22, 2018 by Amie Cranswick

Variety is reporting that The CW is developing a new TV adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, which will gender-swap the title character and adopt a comedic tone.

Entitled Dorian and created by Marisa Coughlan (Lost and Found, Pushing), the potential series “follows a woman who made a deal with the devil 50 years ago to remain young and has spent the subsequent decades living selfishly and without consequences. As the downsides of eternal youth finally land on her, Dorian is ready to grow up and age gracefully, but, to do so, she’ll have to make amends for half a century of bad behavior.”

As it happens, this isn’t the only gender-swapped adaptation of the classic novel in the works, as Lionsgate announced last year that Grammy Award-winning musician St. Vincent (a.k.a. Annie Clark) had signed on to direct a female-led feature scripted by David Birke (Elle).
