The Flash Season 4 Episode 4 Review – ‘Elongated Journey Into Night’

November 3, 2017 by Jessie Robertson

Jessie Robertson reviews the fourth episode of The Flash season 4…

Now, we’re watching The Flash. This episode debuts one of The Flash’s best super-hero buds, Ralph Dibny, DC Comics’ best detective (sorry, Batman), and second most famous stretchy hero, Elongated Man. Story wise, it’s a very interesting idea to have Ralph be enemies with Barry as we meet him here, having to do with a case when Barry was a young CSI.

Most importantly, the jokes and fun times were back; not only is one of the goofiest (and most tragic) DC heroes debuts, but Cisco finally meets Gypsy’s dad after a very intimate scene , and he’s played by the one and only Danny Trejo in a role perfect for him: a disapproving dad. He informs Cisco he hunts every one of Gypsy’s boyfriends (most of them end up dead) and it’s up to Cisco to find out how to avoid that very thing. Strangely, Gypsy is nowhere to be seen during any of this. He gets some advice from Wells (who sticks around) that he doesn’t need superpowers and to use his smarts. Of course, this is Danny Trejo (doesn’t matter if he plays a character named Breacher with the same powers as Cisco & Gypsy; he’s Danny freakin Trejo in everything) so it doesn’t really work.

Joe’s glowing, by the way, and everyone notices; Cecile is missing this week (at a doctor’s appointment?) and Joe is super paranoid about having a child, even though he seems fine with it after almost dying at the hands of a corrupt Mayor Bellows (if he’s anything like the political leaders of Star City, he won’t last long.) Dibny is super charismatic, annoying and cheesy as all get out; but man, he’s killing it here. Once he realizes he can stretch, he needs to be looked after by Caitlin, who serves Barry a hard lesson about forgiveness, which the whole first half of the episode, continues to prove a lot of fan’s theories that Barry is kind of a jerk, and he truly needs to think before he speaks. Dibny becomes a de facto hero in a quick, and kind of sloppy way including the add on scene but he’s so good in this role, it doesn’t hinder the episode that much.

On a side note, the one liners were killer tonight, including, a great reference to Princess Bride by Wells (who is becoming a great version to have this season right now, even though it seemed we may get a new one) and Dibny’s mention of him looking like a Hemsworth; yes we’ve crossed the streams. Okay, The Flash is back….for now.

Rating: 9/10
