The Flickering Myth Reaction to the Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer

January 16, 2019 by Amie Cranswick

Allen Christian: Looks about as far from any Spider-Man I recognize as the first one. Nick Fury sadistically recruiting a teenager might be straight out of a trash Ultimate comic, but it doesn’t fit with the Fury we’ve been presented with so far in the MCU. Aunt May knowing who he is breaks the character in so many ways. The supporting characters are unrecognizable. This isn’t Spider-Man. It’s a generic MCU movie with a Spider-Man-esque character in the middle of it. Though I will say, if they’re going to do Mysterio, they need to lean fully into the ridiculousness, and they seem to have done that.

Shaun Munro: Pretty bold of Marvel to straight-up say, “We all know Spidey’s coming back, here’s a trailer.” It looks really fun and the globe-trotting shtick should help differentiate it from Homecoming. Gyllenhaal and the Mysterio design are just awesome. Like Homecoming I’m expecting an enjoyable if ultimately middle-of-the-road MCU film, anything above that would be gravy.

Andrew Newton: Looks an entertaining film with the humour and action of Homecoming. Taking the action to the UK would be a great way to introduce Captain Britain.

Helen Murdoch: Really good trailer and I love that Nick Fury is back! The tease of Mysterio is good as I really don’t want to see too much until the movie!

Tai Freligh: Apparently Peter Parker is feeling better and not at all concerned about Thanos, so this must take place after Endgame. I really hope that the movie is self-contained much like Aquaman was a solo movie and had no cameos and only one quick reference to Justice League. It looks to be a lot of fun and I like seeing new costumes. Nice surprise seeing Nick Fury and him taking Peter under his wing, much like he does with Captain Marvel in her solo movie… and yes, another person who “died” in Infinity War is back and whole. There’s an Iron Man joke in there, but no sadness from Peter so maybe he survives Endgame too (or I’m just stretching here!)? The storyline looks interesting, the Marvel humor on point and Jake as Mysterio was a very cool reveal! I look forward to seeing this!

Eric Bay-Andersen: Really enjoyed the last Spider-Man film and this looks just as entertaining – I particularly enjoyed MJ and Flash’s lines in this trailer. I’m curious why Nick Fury is acting so intimidating towards Peter, and I’ll be interested to find out how come Aunt May is so cool with Peter’s dangerous double life. As to whether this film is set before or after Endgame, I did notice on the brief shot of Peter’s passport there are no years shown on the valid from/until section – perhaps with the recently released ‘official’ MCU timeline they’re purposely withholding this information to keep speculation alive regarding when this film takes place.

So, a few dissenting voices, but it seems the majority of our writers are looking forward to seeing what Marvel and Sony have cooked up for Spidey’s second solo MCU adventure. But what did you make of the trailer? Let us know in the comments below, on our Facebook page, or tweet us @FlickeringMyth.

Peter Parker (Tom Holland) and his friends go on summer holidays to Europe. However, the friends will hardly be able to rest — Peter will have to agree to help Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) uncover the mystery of creatures that cause natural disasters and destruction throughout the continent.

Spider-Man: Far From Home will be released on July 5th 2019 and features the return of Tom Holland (Spider-Man), Marisa Tomei (Aunt May), Michael Keaton (The Vulture), Zendaya (Michelle), Jacob Batalon (Ned Leeds), Angourie Rice (Betty Brant), Tony Revolori (Flash Thompson), Martin Star (Mr. Harrington), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) and Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), with Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler) as Mysterio and J.B. Smoove (Uncle Drew), Remy Hii (Crazy Rich Asians) and Numan Acar (Homeland) in undisclosed roles.
