Flickering Myth’s writing team share their thoughts on the first Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer…
Yesterday we got our first glimpse of Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the release of the teaser trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home, which sees Peter Parker and his buddies embarking on a European Vacation, only for Nick Fury to show up in need of the friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man. Here’s what our writers made of this peek at the MCU Spidey’s second solo adventure…
Eammon Jacobs: I loved the fact they’ve gone full comic book for Mysterio with his fishbowl head and throwing out green gas/rune projections. The Stealth Spider costume looks so much better in live action than the set photos made out. The music was absolutely stellar and the comedy throughout was spot on. Looks like they’re just going to ignore Endgame completely (for now) and I’m completely okay with that. The ‘Elementals’ that Mysterio’s fighting might be a little too much, but I’m very very excited for this. It’s a great time to be a Spidey fan.
Matt Spencer-Skeen: I loved the first one, this trailer makes me think I’ll love this one as well. Great little details, music is good and looking forward to seeing Jake Gyllenhall as Mysterio, especially after how well they used Michael Keaton as the Vulture in the first film.
Tom Beasley: I’m not as much of a Spider-Man nerd as some, so I can’t get excited about the different suits and all that stuff. However, what does excite me is the notion of Tom Holland as a more comfortable Spidey, ready to have his arrogance up-ended by the arrival of Nick Fury and Mysterio. Gyllenhaal looks set to be a fun villain, with an enjoyably ridiculous comic book look, and the whole thing seems breezy and silly in exactly the way it should be. But there’s a certain dusty, finger-snappy elephant in the room that I just cannot get past.
Scott Watson: Its tone and feel reminds me a lot more of Ant-Man and the Wasp, a big old fun popcorn flick torn right out of the comics. Wasn’t sure how Mysterio was going to appear live action but so far I like what I’m seeing and how they’ve presented him.. Good to see old Nick back in the fold too. Yep, colour me interested.
Tom Jolliffe: Looks like a lot of fun. Hollands suit must fit like a comfy old pair of trainers now. Marvel can bat these out in their sleep, and there’s definitely a sense of it all being quite easy for them. It also looks to have a kind of kooky craziness that Aquaman did for example, but I doubt it’ll be a narrative car crash like Art Curry’s underwater adventure. That said, this doesn’t have Dolph Lundgren on a seahorse, so one up for Curry on that front. Gyllenhaal is also a big selling point here for me and even though I really don’t get too excited about the tie-ins and the ‘look who it is’ moments, I did think Fury popping up was dare I say it, quite cool.
Cameron Frew: Completely sold – class humour, great set-up for a potentially wild story, and a brave dismissal of all purple Titan related shenanigans for the time being. A team-up relationship between Spidey and Mysterio is something I didn’t know I wanted – Gyllenhaal looks fantastic.
EJ Moreno: Meh is the first word that popped into my head. It didn’t do anything for me, but it also wasn’t a poorly made trailer. Just seems like more of the same with a Spider-Man movie, just changing the setting and adding in a bizarre villain. I also felt like everything we saw in the trailer was a Mysterio illusion and I can’t trust anything… which might be the coolest thing Sony/Marvel could ever do.
