The future of Fast & Furious could be female-led, hints Universal boss

November 2, 2022 by EJ Moreno

Is Fast and the Furious looking to move the franchise in an all-new direction?

Chairwoman of Universal Pictures Donna Langley feels the long-running action film series could use a fresh coat of paint as the mainline series ends. Fast X and its sequel will be the epic conclusion to Fast and the Furious, which started way back in 2001.

As the main story, focused on Dominic Toretto and his crew, ends, Langley (along with leading man Vin Diesel) sees a new direction they could go. It seems like with the all-star female cast they have, and Fast movies could focus on them.

“I would love to see a female Fast. So would Vin [Diesel],” Langley said in an interview with Business Insider. “We have so many great and amazing female characters in our franchise, and now there’s the new addition of Brie Larson to add to the incredible roster. I would love to see us do a female Fast.”

Brie Larson and Daniela Melchior are the latest women joining the Fast franchise. The other women include Charlize Theron, Cardi B, Helen Mirren, Nathalie Emmanuel, and series alums Jordana Brewster and Michelle Rodriguez.

Fast X recently saw a significant shake-up as director Justin Lin stepped away. There was a reported conflict on-set with Vin Diesel, and Lin moved away to helm the One-Punch Man movie. Louis Leterrier was later brought on to direct the new Fast film.

Fast X features a cast that includes Vin Diesel, Sung Kang, Nathalie Emmanuel, Michelle Rodriguez, Ludacris, Tyrese Gibson, Charlize Theron, and franchise newcomers Rita Moreno, Jason Momoa, and Brie Larson.

Fast X is currently set for release on May 19th, 2023.
