The Kinks musical Sunny Afternoon heading to the big screen

April 26, 2017 by Gary Collinson

The Daily Mail is reporting that the Olivier Award-winning musical Sunny Afternoon – which tells the story of legendary British rock band The Kinks – is set for a big screen adaptation, with Dexter Fletcher (Eddie the Eagle) reportedly approached to direct.

The film will be scripted by Joe Penhall (Mindhunter) and will explore how Ray Davies, his brother Dave, bass guitarist Pete Quaife and drummer Mick Avory formed The Kinks, the band behind hits such as ‘You Really Got Me’, ‘Tired of Waiting for You’ and ‘Lola’, as well as the sibling rivalry between Ray and Dave.

Sunny Afternoon is said to be in the early stages of development, and producers Francois Ivernel, Charles de Rosen and Sonia Friedman are currently working on securing the story and music rights. There’s no word yet if any of the cast of the West End musical -including John Dagleish and George Maguire, who both won Olivier Awards for portraying Ray and Dave – are expected to reprise their roles.
