The Legend of Zelda movie gets release date, first synopsis

March 31, 2025 by Gary Collinson

With the critical and commercial success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie softening Nintendo’s stance on adapting its IPs, the video game giant is teaming with Sony Pictures to develop a live-action movie based upon the beloved The Legend of Zelda franchise, and now we have an official release date for the film of March 26th 2027.

The Legend of Zelda movie was first announced back in November 2023, with The Maze Runner and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes helmer Wes Ball attached to direct, as well as producing alongside Avi Arad and Zelda co-creator Shigeru Miyamota. Ball subsequently spoke about his ambitions for the adaptation, stating that he was aiming to produce “something serious and cool but fun and whimsical”.

The Legend of Zelda is an action-adventure series taking place in the fantasy world of Hyrule and centred on a young elf-like hero called Link, who in the original 1986 game, embarks on a quest to rescue Princess Zelda from the evil Ganon, the prince of darkness. The franchise has since expanded to incorporate 21 titles across Nintendo’s various platforms, several of which are considered to be among the greatest video games of all time.

As per an alleged synopsis from Production List, The Legend of Zelda movie will follow “Link, a young warrior destined to protect the magical kingdom of Hyrule from the forces of darkness. The land is under threat from Ganon, a ruthless warlord who seeks the Triforce—an ancient relic said to grant limitless power. To stop him, Link must embark on a perilous journey, battling monstrous creatures, exploring treacherous dungeons, and solving intricate puzzles to uncover sacred artifacts that can aid him in his quest.”

Interestingly, Zelda’s release date will see a resurrection of sorts of the old Nintendo vs SEGA rivalry, with Sonic the Hedgehog 4 currently set to open in cinemas a week earlier on March 19th 2027.
