The Marvels is the most expensive Marvel project of Phase Five

September 24, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Director Nia Costa is preparing for her first big adventure into blockbuster filming, and her film The Marvels came with quite the price tag.

During a company filing released yesterday by a Disney subsidiary, the report notes they spent around $270 million on making The Marvels. Per a new article from Forbes, it was stated that they “spent $274.8 million (£221.8 million) and banked a $55 million (£44.4 million) subsidy from the government of the United Kingdom where the movie was made.”

The last time a movie cost over $250 million for Marvel to make was Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which came with a COVID-era production price tag of around $290 million. Before that, the most expensive budget was Avengers: Endgame and its $356–400 million budget.

Marvel is seemingly throwing out tons of money for their projects, as even the Secret Invasion series cost $211.6 million, per Forbes. Could this be something Bob Iger is looking to stop in the future as he tightens up the reins on Marvel Studios and their staggering budgets, especially since they haven’t had a billion-dollar release since Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021? Only time will tell, but The Marvels is following a billion-dollar first entry… let us know your thoughts on our socials @FlickeringMyth….

Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as “The Marvels.”

The Marvels stars Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, Iman Vellani, Zawe Ashton, Gary Lewis, Park Seo-joon, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, Saagar Shaikh, and Samuel L. Jackson.

Marvel Studios’ The Marvels flies into cinemas on November 10th, 2023.
