The music in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will all be influenced by Yondu, says director James Gunn

August 23, 2017 by Jordan Jones

Warning. Spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 lie below…

Director James Gunn revealed during a Live Q&A on Facebook that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’s music is going to be influenced by none other than the late — “I’m Mary Poppins y’all” — Yondu.

Which makes sense, right? The Guardians of the Galaxy franchise is all about family.  For example, the orphaned Star-Lord discovers in the first film that the Guardians are, in fact, his family. Peter Quill spends two entire films looking for, and ultimately finding his father. The music throughout the first two films were given to him by his deceased mother. Through that music, the theme of family literally runs through the entirety of the first film, and it’s sequel.

So, it makes sense that Awesome Mix Vol. 3 would be crafted by another family member: in this case, Peter Quill’s surrogate father Yondu. This begs the question: What kind of music is Yondu into? Seeing as Star Lord’s Walk-Man is broken by Ego, and Yondu gifts Quill with a Zune (because everyone on earth is using it), then maybe he has a more modern taste? Could this be the end of the soft-hits of the ’70s and ’80s that we have come to know and love?

If so, don’t get Hooked on that Feeling for too long. It looks like we may be in for a very different soundtrack in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
