The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the highest grossing video game movie, continues record-breaking box office run

April 16, 2023 by EJ Moreno

We knew The Super Mario Bros. Movie would dominate, but these numbers are impressive. The film is eyeing a worldwide box office total of $659M, and that also places it well over the previous benchmark for video games. What’s crazy is the achievement happened earlier this week when it surpassed $500 million, overtaking 2016’s Warcraft and 2019’s Detective Pikachu.

But looking at just this weekend, the record-breaking did not stop.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie has now posted the best second weekend ever for an animated movie at the domestic box office with $87M, around a 40% drop from its impressive $146 million opening weekend. The previous second-weekend record for an animated movie held by Disney’s Frozen II, which netted $85.9 million.

To add another feather to its cap, it quickly surpassed Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania‘s $474 million box office to become the biggest hit of the year so far. We could be looking at 2023’s first billion-dollar picture.

As next week’s big release, Evil Dead Rise, is projected to bring in only around $15M-$20M (great for the film set initially for streaming), look for more Super Mario Bros. Movie at the top of the box office next weekend.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie features the voice talents of Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.

Based on the world of Nintendo’s Mario games, The Super Mario Bros. Movie invites audiences into a vibrant, thrilling new universe unlike any created before in an action-packed, exuberant cinematic comedy event. While working underground to fix a water main, Brooklyn plumbers Mario (Chris Pratt; Jurassic World and The LEGO Movie franchises) and brother Luigi (Charlie Day; It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) are transported down a mysterious pipe and wander into a magical new world. But when the brothers are separated, Mario embarks on an epic quest to find Luigi.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is now playing in cinemas worldwide.
