The title of Hayao Miyazaki’s new film has been revealed

November 2, 2017 by Gary Collinson

We’ve known for a while now that legendary animator Hayao Miyazaki is coming out of retirement to direct a new feature-length anime movie, with Studio Ghibli reopening its doors to work on the project.

It had been thought that the new film would be a feature adaptation of Boro the Caterpillar, a CG-animated short he had been developing for the Studio Ghibli Museum; however, it seems that isn’t the case after all.

According to Anime News Network, the film will be titled Kimi-tachi wa Dō Ikiru ka – a.k.a How Do You Live? – taken from the title of Genzaburō Yoshino’s 1937 book. It’s said that the book – which revolves around a man and his uncle and explores their spiritual growth – will have a great meaning to the protagonist of Miyazaki’s film.

Miyazaki – whose last film was 2013’s The Wind Rises – has been working on the storyboards for his new film since July 2016, although it was said earlier this year he’d only completed around 20 minutes of storyboarding. He’s also said to be aiming to release the project before the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, although given its current status, that may prove unrealistic.
