Studio Ghibli producer confirms Hayao Miyazaki is working on new film

February 25, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Back in November it was reported that Studio Ghibli co-founder and animation legend Hayao Miyazaki had decided to come out of retirement, having opted to make his CGI short Boro the Caterpillar as a feature length movie.

Up until now, Studio Ghibli had remained tight-lipped on the report, however during an Academy screening of the Oscar-nominated The Red Turtle, producer Toshio Suzuki has confirmed that the rumours are indeed accurate that Miyazaki is working on a new feature, stating that: “Right now in Tokyo, he’s putting all his effort into making it.”

What isn’t clear at the moment is whether as rumoured, the feature is an adaptation of the Boro the Caterpillar short, or a new project entirely. As previously reported, Miyazaki hopes to have finished work on the film by 2019 in order to release it prior to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
