The Top 15 Video Games of 2018

December 31, 2018 by Shaun Munro

12. Spider-Man

Though Insomniac’s Spider-Man is on countless Best of 2018 lists, for this critic’s money it fell a little shy of greatness in a number of key areas. The campaign couldn’t find particularly compelling or diverse gameplay on which to hang its outstanding story, with monotonous puzzle sequences, repetitive stealth sections and mundane wave-based boss fights all feeling positively dated.

The open-world New York City also felt oddly empty and lifeless at times, in part due to the rather mediocre array of peripheral content available. With all this in mind, however, handling the web-slinger has never felt better, and Insomniac did an incredible job giving players a gorgeous sandbox in which to swing around.

What still makes Spider-Man a very good game in spite of its abundant flaws is the addictively fluid combat and a remarkable, unexpectedly affecting story which benefited from terrific voice acting and some bold creative calls.

Clearly Insomniac’s follow-up can learn from the game’s faults, and though it was ultimately a mild disappointment all things considered, Spider-Man was still a damn fun time more often than not.

11. Moss (PSVR)

Moss gave PSVR owners an instant classic early in 2018, for despite its disappointingly short length, the action-adventure title oozed charm while proving beyond any doubt the viability of third-person VR.

Making impossibly cute mouse protagonist Quill an easy mascot for Sony’s headset while presenting a richly realised VR space and touting a wonderfully ethereal musical score, Moss was nothing short of a virtual reality delight.

Studio Polyarc is reportedly already hard at work on a follow-up, and considering how Moss left players hungry for more, it’s just as well.
