The Walking Dead showrunner comments on Rick and Negan’s relationship in season 9

September 5, 2018 by Samuel Brace

Angela Kang, the new showrunner for The Walking Dead, has spoken about how Rick and Negan’s relationship will develop in season nine of the show.

AMC’s hit zombie drama is soon returning for yet another round with its ninth season. Big changes are on the way for the show, including main character Rick Grimes set to depart.

Speaking of whom, one of the biggest points of speculation for the new season is what the relationship between Rick and Negan will look like after last season’s events. Revealing a little about what fans can expect, showrunner Angela Kang said on a preview special (via ComicBook.com):

“We talked about it in the writers room, just this idea of, when a war ends — and then you have people who are soldiers in the war, generals — what happens when there’s no real transition? Because it’s an apocalypse.

“I think in a lot of ways, Rick goes down there and it’s part therapy and part gloating. They’re just trying to work their way through it. They both feel in some ways like dinosaurs after the war. As Rick is trying to figure out what’s the next step, what’s the next mission, Negan kind of needles him, but Rick needs to be able to justify, ‘This is why I kept you alive, it’s so that we can have a future.’”

It will certainly be interesting to see how it all plays out on screen, especially with the knowledge that Rick won’t be around much longer.
