The Week in Star Wars – Chewbacca confirmed for Han Solo spin off, Episode VIII set photos, more Star Wars after 2020 and more

March 13, 2016 by Luke Owen

Your weekend edition of The Week in Star Wars has some news on the Han Solo spin-off movie, Rian Johnson’s Episode VIII set photo, rumoured movies after 2020, some good news for Daisy Ridley and more…

Our top story this week should come to the surprise of literally no one, but Disney CEO Bob Iger has confirmed that Chewbacca will be a part of the yet-to-be-titled Han Solo: A Star Wars Story. “We have other [Star Wars films] in the works, including one, which is an origin story about Han Solo and Chewie,” Iger said during the Deutsche Bank 2016 Media, Internet & Telecom Conference. “And that’ll come after Star Wars: Episode VIII in 2018. And then there’ll possibly be more thereafter.” There’s still no announcement of casting yet, but we should hear something soon-ish…

…Speaking of other Star Wars movies outside of the main timeline, and UK tabloid The Sun (the dirt worst of journalism and scum of the Earth) are claiming they have a source who say there are five more Star Wars movies coming after 2020, pushing some attention to Obi-Wan Kenobi and Mace Windu. “The success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens has given executives much to think about,” claims The Sun’s ‘source’. “So many characters’ back-stories and futures can now be brought to life. When these ideas came from George Lucas 40 years ago, technology was lagging behind. Now they can be turned around in a year.” This is likely to be utter crap, but there is probably some element of truth in there. After all Iger has talked about more Marvel movies after Avengers: Infinity War – Part 2 and Inhumans, and after paying $4 billion for the Star Wars brand they won’t be quick to let it go. Let’s revisit this one another time…

…Lucasfilm announced this week that Secrets of The Force Awakens: A Cinematic Journey – the upcoming feature-length documentary which is set to be included as part of the special features on the Blu-ray release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens – is set to premiere at the South by Southwest Film Festival on Monday, March 14th. The documentary provides an inside look at the making of the epic movie, revealed through in-depth footage and exclusive interviews with the actors and filmmakers…

…On the subject of special features, and you can watch a sneak-peak at that much-talked about table read…

…Speaking of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and its lead star Daisy Ridley has been tapped for the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot. With the release of Assassin’s Creed, The Angry Birds Movie and Warcraft this year and Resident Evil: The Final Chapter released in early 2017, there could be a big push on video game movies in the coming years – assuming those all make money – so this might be a massive role for the young actor. Well, not quite as massive when compared to Star Wars, but still pretty big…

…A couple of weeks back Ridley told a reporter that we should expect to see more set photos from Star Wars: Episode VIII than we did from The Force Awakens due to Rian Johnson being a more open director. Well, she wasn’t wrong. Both Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher have shared some photos and now Johnson himself has, while a batch of spy photos from the Dubrovnik set have also arrived online, which you can see here…

…It’s pretty rare that we post fan films here on Flickering Myth, but every once in a while one comes along that demands your attention. And that’s the case with the latest offering from T7 Productions, which will be of particular interest to fans of The Phantom Menace’s underused villain Darth Maul. So, give yourself 20 minutes, and check out Darth Maul: Apprentice – A Star Wars Film here…

…EA has released a new trailer for Star Wars Battlefront which explores the upcoming free DLC for the multiplayer shooter, including new maps, missions, and Hutt Contracts. Yes you read that right, EA are giving something away for free. Get this while you can…

…And lastly, here’s your comic book previews for the week, kicking off with your first look at Star Wars: Han Solo #1: Everyone’s favorite scoundrel – now starring in his very own series! A-list creators Marjorie Liu and Mark Brooks hop in the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon to bring you a swashbuckling tale of high adventure in deep space! Han Solo has finally entered his ship into the Dragon Void Run – an infamous high-stakes race across the stars. You know, the race Han has dreamt of winning. Only there’s a catch – his entry into this legendary race is a top-secret undercover mission for Princess Leia and the Rebellion! Will he keep his mind on the mission? More importantly – can he manage to pull it off while still maintaining his lead in the race?! And here’s Star Wars: Kanan #12: The rebels’ adventures on Kaller come to an end! But when a friend from Kanan’s past needs help, he stays behind… The look into the past of the former Jedi concludes here!

That’s all for this week – may The Force be with you. And don’t forget to pre-order Star Wars: The Force Awakens via Amazon UK or Amazon US…
