Rumour: Five more Star Wars movies in the works post-2020

March 11, 2016 by Amie Cranswick

Let’s be clear here right off the bat: This rumour stems from British tabloid The Sun, so is likely to be a complete fabrication, albeit one that will likely turn out to have an element of truth to it.

So, according to the paper, Disney and Lucasfilm are now in development on a further five Star Wars movies, which will follow those already announced between now and 2019, and may or may not include solo movies for Obi-Wan Kenobi and Mace Windu.

“The success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens has given executives much to think about,” claims The Sun’s ‘source’. “So many characters’ back-stories and futures can now be brought to life. When these ideas came from George Lucas 40 years ago, technology was lagging behind. Now they can be turned around in a year.”

While the Obi-Wan and Mace Windu aspect is surely just guesswork on The Sun’s behalf, there’s absolutely no reason to think that Disney will bring a halt to its annual Star Wars releases come 2020, so it seems pretty obvious that we’ll be seeing more Star Wars movies as we enter the next decade (assuming the box office keeps up, of course).

Disney and Lucasfilm have Star Wars: Episode VIII and Star Wars: Episode IX set to arrive in 2017 and 2019 respectively, as well as a trio of Anthology movies in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016), the untitled young Han Solo feature (2018) and an as-yet unrevealed project for 2020, which is heavily rumoured to revolve around Boba Fett.
