The Wheel of Time prequel film trilogy in development

July 18, 2021 by Gary Collinson

In addition to the upcoming TV series adaptation at Amazon, iwot productions and Radar Pictures have begun work on a planned feature film trilogy set within the world of Robert Jordan’s bestselling book series The Wheel of Time, tapping Thor and X-Men: First Class screenwriter Zack Stentz to script the first instalment, titled Age of Legends.

As per Deadline, Age of Legends “will be set several millennia before the time of the books, in a period known as the ‘Age of Legends’— a futuristic utopia powered by a magical force shared by men and women known as the ‘One Power.’ When an unspeakable evil is unleashed upon the world, civilization descends into chaos, and war blankets the globe. When men using the One Power become insane and destroy much of the planet, a small band of women unite under the White Tower, and are humanity’s last hope of survival.”

“I’ve been a fan of Robert Jordan’s work for many years, and it is especially his allusions to the origins and backstory of The Wheel of Time that I have always found most intriguing. I’m excited to be bringing this era Robert Jordan conceptualized to life,” said Stentz (via Deadline), “A fusion of the fantasy and science-fiction genres, the Age of Legends is a tale of paradise lost, as a futuristic Garden of Eden devolves into a dangerous and broken world.”

“We are fortunate to have an accomplished storyteller like Zack Stentz, his ability to portray unforgettable characters who command great powers while being prone to everyday human imperfections make him the ideal writer to bring this monumental story to an international audience,” added Rick Selvage of iwot productions, who is executive producing both the film and TV series with iwot’s Larry Mondragon and Ted Field and Justin Smith of Radar Pictures.

As yet, there’s no word on a studio and distributor for the film(s), but The Wheel of Time series has been produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Studios. It is slated to premiere on Amazon Prime Video streaming service later this year and has already been renewed for a second season.
