Thor: Ragnarok star Tessa Thompson discusses a cut scene hinting at Valkyrie’s bisexuality

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Thor: Ragnarok actress Tessa Thompson has revealed that a scene alluding to her character’s bisexuality was left on the cutting-room floor. According to the actress, she convinced director Taika Waititi to direct a scene showing a woman leaving Valkyrie’s bedroom; a scene which had to be cut to keep the plot focused.

The actress recently revealed on Twitter that Valkyrie was bisexual, which would mark the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first LGBT character. However, that doesn’t mean that there isn’t any reference to the character’s sexuality. Thompson revealed a scene in the film that, for her, served as confirmation:

“There were things that we talked about that we allowed to exist in the characterization, but maybe not be explicit in the film… There’s a great shot of me falling back from one of my sisters who’s just been slain. In my mind, that was my lover.”

Since Thor: Ragnarok is a critical hit, it stands to reason that Valkyrie will have more opportunities to tell her story on screen.

In Marvel Studios’ “Thor: Ragnarok,” Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok—the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization—at the hands of an all-powerful threat, the ruthless Hela. But first he must survive a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger—the Incredible Hulk.

Thor: Ragnarok is being directed by Taika Waititi (What We Do in the Shadows) and features Marvel veterans Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Idris Elba as Heimdall and Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk alongside Cate Blanchett as Hela, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster, Karl Urban as Skurge, Taika Waititi as Korg, Clancy Brown as Surtur, Rachel House as Topaz, Tadanobu Asano as Hogun and Sam Neill in an as-yet-unrevealed role. It is set for release on October 24th in the UK and November 3rd in the States.
