Tom Holland “honestly doesn’t know” if he’ll return as Spider-Man after No Way Home

October 31, 2021 by Gary Collinson

Having recently spoken out to describe Spider-Man: No Way Home as feeling like “the end of a franchise”, Tom Holland has now revealed to Empire that his contract with Marvel and Sony expires with this December’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, leaving his future as the web-slinger up in the air.

“I honestly don’t know if I’ll return,” said Holland, who has portrayed Spider-Man on five occasions already in Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home. “It’s the first time since I got cast as Spider-Man that I don’t have a contract.”

Unlike Holland, Spider-Man’s future is a little more clear – although not by much. We do know that the current deal between Disney and Sony calls for one more MCU appearance after No Way Home in a non-Spider-Man led Marvel Studios movie, but beyond that there’s a growing feeling that Sony will take its ball home and bring the web-slinger into its Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters, which just so happens to have recently been rebranded as Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.

As for the man under the mask, one would assume that Marvel will want Tom Holland back for Spidey’s next (final?) MCU appearance. Beyond that, the question may well be whether the opportunity to mix it with the likes of Tom Hardy’s Venom, Jared Leto’s Morbius and Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Kraven the Hunter has enough appeal to make up for the absence of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and the rest of the MCU.

For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero is unmasked and no longer able to separate his normal life from the high-stakes of being a Super Hero. When he asks for help from Doctor Strange the stakes become even more dangerous, forcing him to discover what it truly means to be Spider-Man.

Spider-Man: No Way Home sees Jon Watts (Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home) directing Tom Holland (Spider-Man), Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Zendaya (MJ), Marisa Tomei (Aunt May), Jacob Batalon (Ned Leeds), Tony Revolori (Flash Thompson), Jamie Foxx (Electro) and Alfred Molina (Doctor Octopus).
