Tomb Raider 2 release date delayed indefinitely

October 28, 2020 by Liam Waddington

While we know a sequel to 2018’s Tomb Raider is currently in development, it seems like Alicia Vikander’s second outing as the iconic video game heroine Lara Croft won’t be releasing any time soon.

According to The Wrap, MGM has announced that the Tomb Raider sequel, which was initially set to release on March 19th, 2021, has now been delayed indefinitely.

While very little is known about Tomb Raider 2, we do know the follow-up film will be directed by British filmmaker Ben Wheatley (Rebecca) with his wife and frequent collaborator Amy Jump enlisted to write the script. The sequel has not yet announced additional cast outside of Alicia Vikander or set a production start date.

Although 2018’s Tomb Raider movie – which was met with a mixed critical and fan response – took inspiration from the 2013 Tomb Raider video game reboot, there has been no confirmation whether the sequel will adapt elements from the game’s sequels Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

While the studio didn’t provide a specific reason for the delay, we’ve seen frequent scheduling and release date changes this year due to the ongoing global health crisis. Wheatley meanwhile has also just signed on to direct the Jason Statham shark sequel The Meg 2.

Are you looking forward to the follow-up to 2018’s Tomb Raider? Are you disappointed by the indefinite delay? Let us know on Facebook or Twitter @flickeringmyth…
