Top Gun: Maverick will reportedly start shooting in July

March 6, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Back in May of last year, Tom Cruise promised that the long-rumoured sequel to Top Gun was “definitely happening” and could shoot in 2018, and sure enough, it seems like that is indeed the case.

According to Omega Underground, Top Gun: Maverick will begin principal photography in July, and will shoot through to Thanksgiving. As the site notes, Cruise had been circling a part in Quentin Tarantino’s new film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood but the role has since went to Brad Pitt,, so it’s possible that he faced some scheduling issues with the sequel. Either way, it seems that Paramount and Skydance have decided to move quickly given that Cruise has a gap in his schedule.

Top Gun: Maverick will see Cruise reprising his role as Maverick from the 1986 original, and reteams him with his Oblivion director Joseph Kosinski and original Top Gun producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

Original it was thought that the plot of Maverick would revolve around drone technology, but Kosinski shot down those reports back in October. Meanwhile, we’ve also had some rumoured casting breakdowns for new characters, including Goose’s son.

Top Gun: Maverick is slated for release on July 19th, 2019.
