Toxic Crusaders developer video dives into the Troma video game

January 2, 2025 by Andrew Newton

Retroware have released a new developer update video for the highly anticipated Toxic Crusaders.  This new video (see below) shows what the developers have been working on and provides a glimpse at some of the key elements and characters.  They’ve also hinted at a second quarter of 2025 launch date for digital and physical versions.

This new update video briefly covers everything the team at Retroware have been working on, and there’s plenty for Troma fans to get excited about, including new playable characters, enemies inspired by the original toys and references to iconic Troma movies.  Other elements that the team have been working on include:

  • Upscaling the original cartoon.
  • Implementing new combat features.
  • Updating the combat system.
  • Revamping boss fights.
  • Showcasing the cutscenes
  • The game’s soundtrack by Psychostick.
  • A physical edition made alongside Limited Run Games.

The Toxic Crusaders was a hit in the 1990s and fans young and old enjoyed seeing the adventures of Toxie and his friends as they battled against the villains who caused pollution.  This upcoming side-scrolling beat ’em up will allow players to take control of one of seven playable characters and take on the hordes of Radiation Rangers, mutated thugs and zombie chickens that inhabit seven gross levels.

Players will be able to choose from fan-favourite characters, including Toxie, No-Zone, Junkyard, Major Disaster, Headbanger, Yvonne and Mrs. Junko. All of which will have their own unique moves and abilities.  These characters will also appear in the fully voice-acted comic cutscenes with voice acting by actual Troma film actors.

Look out for Toxic Crusaders arriving later this year. In the meantime, head on over to Toxic Crusaders’ Steam page and download the demo.
