Trailer for Saipan starring Steve Coogan and Éanna Hardwicke as Mick McCarthy and Roy Keane

June 24, 2025 by Amie Cranswick

Vertigo Releasing has shared a trailer for Saipan, the upcoming drama from directors Lisa Barros D’Sa and Glenn Leyburn.

The film tells the story of the events leading up to the 2002 FIFA World Cup  and the intense confrontation between Republic of Ireland captain Roy Keane (Éanna Hardwicke) and national team manager Mick McCarthy (Steve Coogan) which resulted in Keane’s removal from the squad.

Joining Hardwicke and Coogan in the cast are Alice Lowe, Jamie Beamish, Alex Murphy, Harriet Cains and Peter McDonald. Check out the trailer below…

SAIPAN is the thrilling story of football player Roy Keane and his manager Mick McCarthy, and the events leading up to Ireland’s incendiary 2002 World Cup campaign. The intense rivalry between these two personalities transcended the game, gripping an entire nation and the sporting world. On the surface, the feud was all about standards, but deep down it was a hugely emotive story of two men whose rivalry and contempt came to surpass the sport they loved. This is the definitive account of one of the most fractious fallings-out in the history of sport.

Saipan is coming soon.
