Under the Skin TV series moving forward as rights issue settled

May 9, 2020 by Gary Collinson

Back in February it was revealed that financier Silver Reel and studio A24 were locked in a bidding war for the rights to the Scarlett Johansson-headlined 2013 sci-fi horror Under the Skin, and now comes word that Silver Reel has come out victorious, and is now free to push on with its plans for a TV series adaptation.

As reported by Deadline, Silver Reel bid $906,000 for the rights to the film, which were up for grabs after director Jonathan Glazer and producer James Wilson’s production company Seventh Kingdom went into administration. A24 meanwhile had offered $175,000 for the film rights, with a further $210,000 should a TV show be commissioned.

Silver Reel, which financed the original movie, has been keen on producing a TV series for several years but had failed to reach a deal with Glazer and Wilson, prompting the company to call in its debt on the film and forcing Seventh Kingdom into administration.

It’s unclear at this point whether Glazer and Wilson will be involved with the proposed TV series, but Silver Reel CEO Claudia Bluemhuber has promised that it will be “very respectful” of the film, but will also draw heavily on Michel Faber’s original novel.

Under the Skin starred Scarlett Johansson as an extraterrestrial who assumes the identity of a young woman and travels around Scotland seducing men before luring them into a mysterious liquid abyss. It disappointed at the box office, grossing just $7.2 million, but was acclaimed by critics and has since become a cult favourite.
