Universal set to relaunch American Pie with a “fresh take”

October 2, 2022 by EJ Moreno

Do you want to see American Pie for a whole new generation?

Universal wants to bring back the raunchy teen comedy with Insecure actor and Definition Please filmmaker Sujata Day. The Hollywood Reporter broke the story that Day would write a new American Pie with a story based on her original pitch. It’s currently described as a “fresh take” on the franchise.

“Obsessed with raunchy comedies, and American Pie is one of my all-time faves!” Day wrote on Twitter to confirm the news. She adds, “So excited to be working on this movie.”

This will mark the fifth mainline entry in the series. The first American Pie film was released in 1999, with a sequel following in 2001 before two spinoffs: American Wedding in 2003 and American Reunion in 2012.

After the original movies, the film series would launch the spinoff franchise American Pie Presents. Five films came under that umbrella and had a somewhat popular life in the home video world. The most recent installment was 2020’s American Pie Presents: Girls’ Rules, which currently sits at 30% on Rotten Tomatoes [read our review here].

Currently, no director is attached to Sujata Day’s American Pie script, and there’s no word if any of the original actors will return.
