HBO and DC Studios are teaming up for another live-action comic book adaptation, with James Gunn and Peter Safran set to executive produce a small screen take on Alan Moore and David Lloyd’s iconic comic series V for Vendetta from writer and executive producer Pete Jackson (The Death of Bunny Munro).
Originally debuting as part of the British comic anthology Warrior in 1982 before moving to DC Comics in 1988, V for Vendetta takes place in a dystopian Britain ruled by the fascist Norsefire party and follows a teenage girl called Evey Hammond who finds herself embroiled in a revolution against the police state led by V, an anarchist wearing a signature Guy Fawkes mask.
V for Vendetta was previously brought to the screen in 2005, with James McTeigue directing from a script by the Wachowskis and Natalie Portman and Hugo Weaving starring as Evey and V respectively. Meanwhile, the third season of Epix’s DC series Pennyworth also served as a prequel to the events of the graphic novel, although the show was cancelled before the storyline was able to fully play out.
This will mark the second Alan Moore-related project for HBO and DC after 2019’s Watchmen, which served as a prequel to Moore’s comic. They are also coming off the Emmy-winning The Penguin and have the DC Universe-set Lanterns slated to premiere in 2026.
