Victor Frankenstein has one of the worst opening weekends of all-time

November 30, 2015 by Luke Owen

There have been a few big name films that have bombed at the box office this year, including Terminator: Genisys, Crimson Peak, American Ultra, Pan, Pixels and Mortdecai, but Victor Frankenstein has topped the lot.

With a domestic box office opening weekend of $2.35 million, Victor Frankenstein is not only the lowest opening of any movie this year in more than 2,500 screens, it’s also the lowest opening ever for a movie shown in more than 2,500 screens. You can check out the rest of the list here, which also includes Max Landis’ other movie from 2015, American Ultra.

Victor Frankenstein also scored a CinemaScore of C, which isn’t a good sign for the movie. It didn’t break the Top 10 this weekend, and it probably won’t see any sort of bump for next weekend. The reported budget for the movie is $40 million.

In some brighter news, the movie did have a Wednesday opening which bumped up its overall total to $3.4 million, and it also pulled in another $10 million from 24 overseas markets. Victor Frankenstein is still to open in the UK.

James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe star in a dynamic and thrilling twist on a legendary tale. Radical scientist Victor Frankenstein (James McAvoy) and his equally brilliant protégé Igor Strausman (Daniel Radcliffe) share a noble vision of aiding humanity through their groundbreaking research into immortality. But Victor’s experiments go too far, and his obsession has horrifying consequences. Only Igor can bring his friend back from the brink of madness and save him from his monstrous creation.

Victor Frankenstein is out now in the States and December 4th in the UK, with Paul McGuigan directing a cast that includes James McAvoy, Daniel Radcliffe, Andrew Scott Jessica Brown Findlay, Freddie Fox, Mark Gatiss, and Louise Brealey.
