Pixels bombs at the box office with just $24 million

July 27, 2015 by Luke Owen

Adam Sandler’s latest movie, Pixels, hasn’t had great reviews from critics so far (read our review here), with some reviews calling it one of the worst movies ever made. And the box office has reflected the poor showing from the critic-circle with a very disappointing $24 million opening weekend.

With a reported budget of $88 million (not including marketing costs), Pixels has an uphill struggle now to recuperate its costs. Sony were hoping to captalise on the “nostalgia effect” with the movie and bring in those who spent their youth plugging quarters into games like Pac-Man and Donkey Kong, but they’ve not churned out in their droves to see the movie as expected. Experts said that the movie could open to $30 million, but some suspect that the events in Louisiana could have affected the movie’s takings.

Despite dropping 56% on its opening weekend, Pixels couldn’t beat Ant-Man to take the number one spot.

Pixels is up on his previous release Blended’s opening weekend ($14 million), but is below Jack & Jill ($25 million), Grown Ups ($40 million), Grown Ups 2 ($41 million), You Don’t Mess With The Zohan ($38 million) and I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry ($34 million).
