Video Review – Shelby Oaks is a disturbed family drama and found footage love letter

August 3, 2024 by EJ Moreno

EJ Moreno reviews Chris Stuckmann’s Shelby Oaks…

In a love letter to found-footage movies and horror in the digital age, Shelby Oaks introduces the horror community to a new force in writer/director Chris Stuckmann.

The explosive debut film from the critic-turned-filmmaker works well because it takes time to build trust before shattering everything you know with pure horror. Sometimes, family grief and family drama are scarier than a monster sitting in the corner. Join critic EJ Moreno for an early look at what could be one of the best horror debuts ever and the found-footage movie this generation needs.

Shelby Oaks is produced, written, and directed by Chris Stuckmann and stars Camille Sullivan, Brendan Sexton III, Michael Beach, Robin Bartlett, Keith David, Charlie Talbert, Emily Bennett, and Sarah Durn. Aaron B. Koontz, Cameron Burns, and Ashleigh Snead also produced the film.

Mia frantically searches for her sister Riley, after Riley ominously disappeared in the last taping of a show by a group of paranormal investigators called the Paranormal Paranoids. As Mia’s obsession grows, she begins to suspect that the imaginary demon from Riley’s childhood may be real.

Shelby Oaks had its world premiere at the 28th Fantasia International Film Festival on July 20, 2024, and is scheduled to be released in the United States by Neon sometime in 2025.
