Wargaming announces free-to-play mech shooter Steel Hunters

December 13, 2024 by Andrew Newton

Wargaming, the developer behind the marvellous World of Tanks and World of Warships Franchises, has announced at this year’s Games Awards their new upcoming title, Steel Hunters.  This new free-to-play mech shooter will blend Battle Royale and Extraction mechanics with giant, powerful mechs to create epic battles.  A reveal trailer and a game play trailer can be seen below….

Steel Hunters is set in a futuristic world where humans struggle to survive following a catastrophic event that saw a rare extraterrestrial resource called Starfall crash into the Earth.  To secure this valuable material, Corporations and Factions manufactured big mechs called Hunters and equipped them with powerful weaponry to create formidable combat machines.  These Hunters have their own distinct playstyles, ability kits and progression systems to allow for a variety of tactics and strategies to be played out on the battlefield.

This new IP features:

  • A combination of game mechanics fromHero Shooters, Battle Royal and Extraction games where players battle others within a PvPvE arena to achieve objectives.
  • Master different Hunters and use their ability kits and progression systems in the most effective way.
  • Understand your Hunter’s strengths and weaknesses, abilities, cooldowns and synergies.
  • Cooperation is essential to achieving victory and players will need to work with their duo partner (whether a friend or matched with another Hunter) and combine their abilities.
  • Unreal Engine 5 helps immerse the player in a highly realistic world and the destructible environment reinforces this and allows for a deeper level of strategy.
  • A high level of customisation – Hunters have distinct build options that allow for different gear combinations.

Victor Kislyi, Wargaming CEO said, “We are best known for creating immersive and sustainable digital hobbies for millions of gamers around the world. With Steel Hunters, we’re pushing past our boundaries and bringing something completely new. Our ambition is to create one of the most exhilarating and compelling mech experiences ever.”

“Steel Hunters is the result of incredible teamwork and dedication of our talented people in Guildford, Prague and our studios around the world,” said Mike McDonald, Product Director. “Over the past 3 years, we’ve worked relentlessly to create a game that offers a unique take on the mech shooter space by combining elements of different genres into one compelling mix. Today we’re finally ready to show players what we’ve been building.”

There’s currently an exclusive 10-day closed playtest, available for PC players. If you fancy giving Steel Hunters a try then sign up for it here.
