Wes Craven’s estate reportedly taking pitches for A Nightmare on Elm Street movies and TV shows

November 25, 2019 by Gary Collinson

It seems that Freddy Krueger may be readying for a return to haunt our dreams, as Bloody Disgusting is reporting that the estate of late filmmaker Wes Craven is now taking pitches for a revival of the iconic A Nightmare on Elm Street horror franchise.

The U.S. rights to A Nightmare on Elm Street and the razor glove-wielding dream demon Freddy reverted back to Craven’s estate earlier this year, BD’s latest report states that the estate are now actively seeking pitches, both for feature film projects and a potential HBO Max TV series.

Unlike Friday the 13th and its unstoppable killer Jason Voorhees, which are currently tangled in a complex web of rights issues, Craven’s estate has the sole domestic rights to the Nightmare series and Freddy, while Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema still retain the international rights. Therefore it would be relatively simple to get a new project up and running, should the right take be found.

Interestingly, Elijah Wood and Daniel Noah have recently expressed their interest in bringing A Nightmare on Elm Street back to the big screen through their SpectreVision production banner, with the duo stating that they have spoken to the rights holders and “have a very specific take on it”.

Meanwhile, in the wake of the success of last year’s Halloween, Freddy Krueger himself Robert Englund suggested that he’d be open to the possibility of donning the fedora and sweater for one final outing, despite having announced a year earlier that he was too old to portray Freddy again and tipping Kevin Bacon for his successor in the role.

Would you like to see Freddy Krueger terrorising the children of Springfield once again? Can the franchise succeed without Robert Englund’s involvement? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or on our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
