Westworld confirms returning characters for season 2 and Jonathan Nolan explains that mysterious white robot

March 1, 2018 by Samuel Brace

Jonathan Nolan has revealed details regarding that white robot from season two’s trailer and confirms certain characters that will be returning this time around.

Westworld season two is nearly upon us, with its HBO release date of April 22 looming large in many a fan’s mind. The season two trailer certainly cranked up the excitement level for the hit sci-fi series but there was one moment in particular that got fans talking.

There’s a brief shot of Bernard with a new and very creepy looking white figure behind him, but the trailer quickly shoots off elsewhere before we can figure out anything about what’s going on.

Luckily, Westworld’s creator, Jonathan Nolan, has explained to EW that this is called a Drone Host and he also spoke a little more about its purposes:

“The drone hosts relate to the corporation’s secret project which is hidden in plain sight in this park. As we talked about in the pilot, the park is one thing for the guests, and it’s another thing for its shareholders and management — something completely different. We’ve used the Google analogy — for consumers, it’s for search and email, yet for the company, it’s for advertising. There is an agenda here that Delos has undertaken for a very long time. As Bernard is making his way through the wreckage of the fallout from the first season, he’s discovering things about the park that even he doesn’t know and coming upon creatures like the drone host.”

Well it certainly sounds creepy enough and it’s great to see new elements being introduced to the show.

But if you’re looking forward to more of your favourite characters from season one appearing in the second outing, you needn’t worry, as Nolan and his co-showrunner Lisa Joy revealed (again via EW) that The Man in Black and his younger incarnation, William, will both be returning.

The show has also made it known that Elsie and Stubbs are also back for more, with Joy saying, “They’re finally getting to experience Westworld as guests and not in the managerial halls, but I’m not sure they’re enjoying their experience.”

Among other key characters returning for season two, fans will be delighted to hear that Dr. Robert Ford (the character played by Anthony Hopkins) will be making an appearance via flashback as his younger self.

Meanwhile, thanks to EW, we’ve got a few new images from season 2, which you can find here…

Live without limits in a world where every human appetite can be indulged. Created for television by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, comes this dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the evolution of sin.

Westworld season 2 premieres on April 22nd on HBO.
