Which of Christopher Nolan’s Favourite Actors Should Star in His Next Movie?

March 19, 2019 by Samuel Brace

Matthew McConaughey

I have to say, Matthew McConaughey might be my number one choice. While the actor has only worked with Nolan once before, what they achieved with Interstellar in 2014 was something remarkable. McConaughey is one of the best actors working today when he has the right material so for a particular type of role, there are a very few better choices. How likely is it? It’s almost impossible to say. But the fact that he has worked with Nolan only once in the past might actually play into his hands if Nolan and Hardy are tired of each other for now and the director wants to utilise someone familiar to him. With the McConaissance somewhat dwindling in recent years, the actor would surely jump at the chance to star in what is likely going to be another slam dunk blockbuster.

Leonardo DiCaprio

This next option is bound to be a popular one with a plethora of movie-goers. Leonardo DiCaprio is one of the last true movie stars working today; someone who can actually sell substantial tickets with his name alone, and when his name is attached, quality is nearly always assured. DiCaprio was also the star of one of Nolan’s most beloved hits in 2010’s Inception and with this being their only collaboration so far, it would be a welcome sight indeed to see them work together once more on another blockbuster. If Nolan can get him, DiCaprio might be the best option of the bunch, his performance as Cobb was fantastic and his star quality will add yet another layer of hype to what is already a big movie event.

Someone New

While there are some other name’s we can throw out there, a long shot like a Guy Pearce, for example, who hasn’t worked with Nolan since Memento in 2000, we can’t rule out the very good possibility that there will be an entirely new actor in the starring role, with the cast then packed out with returning favourites from Nolan’s cinematic career. So, who would I like to see land what will surely be a much-coveted role?

I would personally enjoy seeing Nolan follow the Interstellar route and pick an actor that seems strange at first thought. I was completely uninterested in seeing McConaughey in the part of Cooper at the time his casting was announced (the McConaissance not yet in full swing). Tom Cruise is, of course, still a major movie star, but to see him lead in a dramatic Nolan picture that makes use of his underappreciated acting chops, as well as his action-prowess, would be great fun. Or, if I’m really allowed to dream (please, do indulge me), there would be no better director than Nolan to finally make a movie star out of Jon Bernthal – an actor that has all the gifts and just needs the big screen opportunity to become a powerful leading man.

What do you think? Who would you like to see star in Nolan’s next movie? Let us know in the comments below or tweet us @FlickeringMyth…
