Willow sequel could be heading to Disney+

May 2, 2019 by Matt Rodgers

Rumours of a follow-up to Ron Howard’s Willow have been omnipresent in gossip columns for decades, with the Apollo 13 director addressing them as recently as last year whilst performing the rounds for Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Now it’s being reported that if you didn’t have reason enough for signing up to Disney+, what with The Mandalorian and Marvel spin-offs heading our way, Howard and his Solo screenwriter Jonathan Kasdan are in negotiations with the start-up streaming service for a sequel to the 1988 fantasy adventure.

Speaking to MTV’s Happy Sad Confused Podcast, Howard stated that “serious discussions” were ongoing, before confirming that Warwick Davis was likely to return as the film’s hero. He said “Warwick is so cool and so good and he’s such a good actor that I really hope we get the chance to see the mature Willow in action”.

When it was released in 1988, Willow under-performed at the box-office, grossing just $57 million domestically when people were expecting a fantasy version of Star Wars. In the intervening years it has garnered something of a cult following and retrospective reappraisal.

The story of Willow Ufgood, a family man and farmer who discovers a baby feted to bring about the downfall of sorceress Queen Bavmorda, and who along with Val Kilmer’s mercenary swordsman Madmartigan, must protect the child from the forces of evil.

Disney+ goes live in the US on November 12th.
