Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins says Warner Bros. changed her original ending of the first movie

December 24, 2020 by Amie Cranswick

While 2017’s Wonder Woman proved to be a hit with critics and audiences alike, one aspect that came in for criticism was the film’s climactic battle between Gal Gadot’s Amazon Princess and David Thewlis’ Ares – particularly once the God of War underwent his transformation into a CGI behemoth.

Speaking to IGN to promote the release of the sequel Wonder Woman 1984, director Patty Jenkins has revealed that she originally planned on ending the first movie differently, only for Warner Bros. to demand the explosive, VFX-packed ending that we ultimately saw.

“The original end of the first movie was also smaller, but the studio made me change it at the last minute. And so, that’s always been a little bit of a bummer that that’s the one thing people talk about, because I agreed, and I told the studio we didn’t have time to do it. But, it was what it was, and I ended up loving it, but that wasn’t the original ending of the movie.”

Unfortunately Jenkins didn’t reveal how she intended on bringing things to a close, but her ending presumably wouldn’t have relied so heavily of CGI and spectacle.

Wonder Woman 1984 reunites Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins with stars Gal Gadot (Diana Prince), Chris Pine (Steve Trevor), Connie Nielsen (Queen Hippolyta), Robin Wright (General Antiope) and new additions Kristen Wiig (Ghostbusters) as Barbara Ann Minerva/Cheetah,  and Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones) as Maxwell Lord.
