Woody Allen’s A Rainy Day In New York shelved indefinitely

August 31, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Almost a year on from principal photography, it seems that Woody Allen’s latest film A Rainy Day in New York may not see the light of day, with distributors Amazon responding to rumours that the film has been shelved indefinitely by stating that: “No release date has ever been set.”

The statement followed a report from Page Six that Amazon is unlikely to release the movie, which features a cast that includes Timothee Chalamet, Selena Gomez, Jude Law, Rebecca Hall and Elle Fanning, despite the fact it may cost them around $25 million.

Allen has come under increased fire during the #MeToo movement, as old allegations of child molestation made by his daughter Dylan Farrow came back into the spotlight. The issue for Amazon has been intensified given that A Rainy Day in New York is said to involve sexual flirtation between an older man and teenage girl.

Should the film not see the light of day, 2018 would be the first year in 44 years that Allen hasn’t released at least one feature. It also raises doubts about the remaining movies in his five-film deal with Amazon, which has so far included 2016’s Cafe Society and 2017’s Wonder Wheel.
