Zack Snyder goes gaming: Rebel Moon RPG video game in the works

March 21, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Zack Snyder has dominated film with his distinct style and conversation-starting blockbusters, but now the filmmaker is heading to a world he’s never entered: video games.

Snyder stopped by The Nerd Queens podcast to discuss SnyderCon and his films, especially his upcoming Netflix project Rebel Moon. In discussing the forthcoming sci-fi space epic, the filmmaker revealed that there’s also a video game in the works based on the project, and he’s helping with the game’s development.

“The one thing that I’m having a really good time with – and I don’t really know if I’m supposed to talk about it – is this RPG that we’re doing that is just literally insane, and so immersive and so intense and so huge,” before adding, “There’s more coming, but all I’ll say is that it was pitched to me – because I’ve always wanted to do an RPG – like, ‘well, we could do it at this scale, or we could do it at ridiculous scale.”

He adds that there’s been a pitch made to an as-of-yet unnamed developer, and there are still relatively early developments.

The upcoming Rebel Moon movie is “set in a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy that finds itself threatened by the armies of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius. They dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them take a stand against the Tyrant.”

We are decades and decades into the Star Wars franchise and are just now hitting the surface of an expansive world. Giving Rebel Moon a video game this early could help people quickly fall in love with the world Snyder created. With the plot, an epic RPG could help flesh out the story and allow fans to explore the universe early into its creation.

Rebel Moon will join Army of the Dead as Zack Snyder’s new Netflix universe. After a tumultuous few years with Warner Bros making DC films, this is a fresh new start for Snyder and a chance to carve out his own legacy, if it’s films, anime, or now video games.

Directed by Zack Snyder, Rebel Moon features an ensemble cast that includes Sofia Boutella, Charlie Hunnam, Djimon Hounsou, Anthony Hopkins, Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, Stuart Martin, Cary Elwes, Corey Stoll, Michiel Huisman, Alfonso Herrera, Ed Skrein, Cleopatra Coleman, Fra Fee, Rhian Rees, Jena Malone, E. Duffy, Charlotte Maggi, Sky Yang, and Staz Nair.

Snyder has penned the script for Rebel Moon alongside longtime collaborators Shay Hatten and Kurt Johnstad, with who he wrote Army of the Dead and 300, respectively. Synder will also produce the film with his producing partner and wife, Deborah Snyder and Wesley Coller, via the trio’s The Stone Quarry production banner. Eric Newman of Grand Electric is also producing.

Rebel Moon is set for release on December 22nd, 2023.
