Another film has seen a delay caused by the ongoing strike in Hollywood, as Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers, starring Zendaya, will open sometime in 2024.
The project will no longer be the Venice Film Festival opener due to promotional complications with the SAG-AFTRA strike. Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist would not have been able to attend the premiere on August 30th before the September 15th cinema debut.
Venice organizers confirmed in a statement this week that Challengers “will not participate at the festival following a decision made by the production.”
This marks Guadagnino’s first full-fledged U.S. studio movie, but fans will have to wait a little longer now. Zendaya is now hit with another delay on a release, as her hit HBO series Euphoria is likely seeing another delay.
From visionary filmmaker Luca Guadagnino, Challengers stars Zendaya as Tashi Duncan, a former tennis prodigy turned coach and a force of nature who makes no apologies for her game on and off the court. Married to a champion on a losing streak (Mike Faist – West Side Story), Tashi’s strategy for her husband’s redemption takes a surprising turn when he must face off against the washed-up Patrick (Josh O’Connor – The Crown) – his former best friend and Tashi’s former boyfriend. As their pasts and presents collide, and tensions run high, Tashi must ask herself, what will it cost to win.
